The European Central Financial institution (ECB) mentioned Thursday its deliberate digital euro app will exceed the accessibility necessities of the European Accessibility Act.

The proposed design consists of enhanced visible design, full keyboard navigation, screen-reader help, time-out warnings, simplified language, error prevention and decreased movement settings, amongst different accessibility options, the ECB mentioned in a Thursday launch.

The ECB first described the standalone digital euro app in an October 2025 progress report, saying it will function a fallback if financial institution apps failed and permit customers to change fee service suppliers with out studying a brand new software. The report mentioned each financial institution and non-bank fee service suppliers opposed necessary help for the standalone app.

The digital euro is the European Union’s proposed central financial institution digital foreign money (CBDC), designed to enrich money by offering a public digital fee choice throughout the euro space.

On July 14, the ECB chosen 36 fee service suppliers to take part in a 12-month pilot scheduled to start within the second half of 2027, testing the system earlier than any choice on issuance.

The digital euro has drawn criticism from some privateness advocates and lawmakers, who argue a CBDC might allow better authorities surveillance of funds, whereas the ECB has mentioned it should embrace privateness safeguards.
