Augustus raises $180 million to build a clearing bank for the AI and stablecoin era

Augustus, a startup constructing a federally chartered clearing financial institution for fintechs and monetary establishments, mentioned it raised $180 million to develop its greenback fee infrastructure as stablecoins reshape world finance.

The fundraising valued the corporate at $1 billion, with Tiger International main the spherical and traders corresponding to Hummingbird, QED and the founders of Nubank, Ramp, Circle and Deel taking part, the corporate mentioned in a Tuesday press launch.

The funding comes as banks, fintechs and crypto companies are racing to modernize the infrastructure behind cross-border funds. Whereas a lot of the eye has centered on stablecoin issuers, Augustus is concentrating on a much less seen however essential a part of the monetary system: correspondent banking.

“We expect distribution breaks on the clearing financial institution layer,” CEO Ferdinand Dabitz informed CoinDesk in an interview. Legacy clearing methods are “gradual, unavailable, take two days to settle and shut on the weekends,” he argued.

Taking over correspondent banking

The agency is constructing what Dabitz described as an “AI-native” clearing financial institution designed round stablecoins, programmable cash and always-on settlement.

Augustus does not plan to concern its personal stablecoin, Dabitz mentioned. As a substitute, it needs to offer the banking infrastructure that lets monetary establishments transfer cash throughout conventional fee methods and blockchain networks.
