Bitfinex hacker Ilya Lichtenstein credits Trump for early release from prison

Ilya Lichtenstein, who pled responsible to cash laundering costs tied to his position within the large hack of crypto change Bitfinex, has apparently been launched early from jail.

In a Thursday night publish on X, Lichtenstein mentioned he was out early “because of President Trump’s First Step Act” (a jail reform invoice handed throughout Trump’s first time period).

“I stay dedicated to creating a constructive impression in cybersecurity as quickly as I can,” Lichtenstein mentioned. “To the supporters, thanks for every part. To the haters, I stay up for proving you unsuitable.”

The Division of Justice arrested Lichtenstein and his spouse Heather Morgan in 2022 and seized $3.6 billion price of bitcoins that had been stolen from Bitfinex. The couple grew to become notorious after their arrest and had been featured in a Netflix documentary referred to as “Largest Heist Ever.”

Lichtenstein ultimately admitted to his position within the hack and was sentenced to 5 years in jail.

It’s not clear whether or not the Trump administration performed a direct position within the launch. An administration official advised CNBC that Lichtenstein “has served vital time on his sentence and is presently on house confinement in keeping with statute and Bureau of Prisons insurance policies.”
