Major Bank Handing $155,800,000 To Customers In Long-Awaited Overdraft Fee Settlement

A significant US financial institution has agreed to pay tons of of hundreds of thousands of {dollars} to settle allegations that prospects had been charged unlawful overdraft charges for years.

Georgia-based prospects of SunTrust Financial institution, which is now working as Truist Financial institution, will share within the long-awaited settlement fund.

The deal resolves a 2010 class-action lawsuit claiming the financial institution charged overdraft charges that functioned as unlawful extreme curiosity beneath Georgia’s usury legal guidelines.

Initially filed by Jeff Bickerstaff Jr., who died in 2014, the case sought refunds for charges on overdrafts of $500 or much less from ATM or debit transactions.

Eligible class members are Georgia residents who paid unrefunded overdraft charges between July 12, 2006, and April 15, 2014.

The settlement quantity is as much as $240 million complete, with an estimated $84.2 million overlaying attorneys’ charges, bills, administration prices and an incentive to the category consultant, leaving $155.8 million for patrons.

Funds are claims-based and professional rata from the online fund after deductions. Unclaimed funds might be returned to Truist.

The financial institution denies wrongdoing and says it settled to finish litigation.

The settlement was granted preliminary approval late final month, and the deadline to file a declare might be introduced after remaining approval is granted.
